Primary Purpose of the Job:

The WASH Officer will be responsible for ensuring that water, sanitation, and hygiene project and awareness are implemented effectively, professionally, and in accordance with the culture and practices of the local population. They will also contribute to health improvement though improved access to sustainable WASH services to host communities. The role supports all WASH related activities in Cholera Secretariat, Neglected Tropical Diseases and Disaster Relief & Preparedness.

Reporting To:  Lead WASH

Duties And Responsibilities 

  • Provide support in water, sanitation, and hygiene promotion program design & implementation in broad coordination with other sectorsContributing to contingency planning for possible WASH emergency response if required
  • Collaborating and coordinating with the government, Social Business Units, local authorities, schools on WASH issues with the supervisorAssist with financial accountability for available financial resources and acquittals of such in line with financial policiesCompile and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual reports as well as other reports as may be requested by the project lead.
  • Produces technical guidelines for implementation of WASH components (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene activities)Support in implementation of WASH interventions which includes activities such as, organizing of cholera hotspot assessment visits, facilitating establishment of schools and community health clubs, facilitate training of community health workers and school health masters etc.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Degree in development work or water and sanitation related studies
  • At least 3 years’ experience in WASH programmes working for an NGO in both rural and urban settings preferredStrong appreciation of the importance of WASH Hardware and Software and community participation in project activities.
  • Knowledge of WASH project monitoring and evaluation techniques.
  • Experience in working with diverse partners
  • Knowledge of training communities in various areas that may include community latrine builders, Village Pump Mechanics using people centred approaches, (participatory approaches)
