Job Description

The UN Clinic was established to provide competent primary health care services in Zimbabwe for UN personnel and their eligible dependents. The clinic is mandated with the provision of workplace occupational health care management systems and structures, to ensure a robust response mechanism to staff and dependents health challenges. Whilst curative care is equally important, special emphasis has always been on promotive and preventive health care management services.

The UN family in Zimbabwe has not been spared by the COVID-19 pandemic and this saw the need to enhance the capacity of the UN Clinic staff. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic , extra staff was hired for the UN Clinic on a temporary basis to augment the existing medical staff to strengthen the fight against the pandemic. This staff structure was partly maintained as a measure of preparedness against future waves of COVID-19 , other pandemics and leverage the effects of the deterioration of the health delivery system in the country.. The economical situation in the country has also seen alarming exodus of health care personnel including doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists, nurses’ aides etc. This situation makes our roster ineffective with difficulties to get the selected health personnel when needed.The additional staff will be required to start as soon as possible and continue for the period covering 12 months. This is to ensure that adequate care is given as and when needed to UN Staff and dependents.

Duties and Responsibilities

General communication and assistance of patients:

  • Reception and assistance of patients for treatment by the UN Physician.
  • Reception and assistance of clients for attention by the UN Counsellor,
  • Assisting visitors, responding to patient bookings and other enquiry calls.
  • Giving advice to International and local UN staff and their dependents on available medical services in the country.
  • Translation to doctor / patient into English / local language of Shona / Ndebele

Treatment and care of patients:

  • Management of emergency/acute cases at the clinic.
  • Attending to critically ill patients before transfer to major hospitals/clinics.
  • Leading in cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the absence of the UN Physician.
  • Treatment of minor ailments through nurse consultation including dressings.
  • Dispensation of doctor's prescriptions including injections and immunizations.
  • Basic counselling on psycho-social issues and referrals to UN Counsellor.
  • Checking and restocking the UN Physician's medical emergency bag.

Maintain clinic in good order and security of equipment:

  • Ensuring the clinic is clean and in a welcoming state.
  • Safe record keeping of patient files and their accessibility when needed.
  • Security of clinic movable and immovable equipment.
  • Safe keeping of medicines and ordering of adequate stocks.
  • Carry out monthly drug stock checking

Administrative work attached to clinic:

  • Supervisory duties as designated by the UN Physician in the absence of the sister in- charge.
  • Assisting in the smooth running of the clinic processes.
  • Ensuring confidential record keeping of patients' records.
  • Compilation of monthly patient attendance statistics.

Assisting the UN Physician with procedures and other delegated duties and responsibilities:

  • Processing of medical examinations: entry, periodic and exit.
  • Referral of patients to other UN Doctors in the absence of the UN Physician.
  • Referrals of patients' other medical services which are not offered at the clinic such as family planning, child immunizations, women's health etc.
  • Attending to emergencies after hours as requested by the UN Physician. Preparation of outreach equipment for the UN Doctor.

Institutional Arrangement:

  • Under the direct supervision of the UN Health Manager the Nurse will ensure provision of efficient medical emergency care and nursing services to UN staff and their eligible dependents.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma in Nursing.
  • National registration and license.
  • Qualification in either Anesthesia/ICU/Midwifery/Theater training.
  • Critical Care and Trauma Certificate.
  • Certificate in Advanced Cardiac Life support.
  • Computer Literacy.
  • A minimum of 6 years’ experience in Critical Emergency Care and administration.
  • Demonstrated experience in the management of emergency/acute cases.
  • Experience in attending to critically ill patients before transfer to major hospitals/clinics.
  • Experience in treatment of minor ailments through nurse consultation
  • Knowledge of safe and confidential record keeping of patient files.
  • In-depth knowledge in compilation of monthly patient statistics
  • Previous working experience with the UN would be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge in emergency nursing including BLS, ACLS. And experience in working in ICU an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Experience in primary health care support services including ECG, monitor management ,assisting Doctors with procedure processes.
  • Experience in capacity development on health matters at international level is desirable.
  • Qualification in either anesthesia/ICU/Midwifery/Theater training, Critical Care and Trauma is an added advantage.
  • Language: Fluency in written and spoken English and basic working knowledge in both Shona and Ndebele.
