Job Description
The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, known by its Spanish acronym, CIMMYT®, is a not -for-profit research and training organization with partners in over 100 countries. Please refer to our website for more information: www.cimmyt.org We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated candidate for the position of Livestock Research Associate to be based in our Southern Africa Office in Harare, Zimbabwe. This is a nationally recruited position and is open to all Zimbabweans with excellent academic records and relevant experience.The position will work directly with different CIMMYT scientists to conduct on-station and on-farm research, analyse results, write-up and disseminate findings. He/she will be expected to provide logistical support to aid project administration. The incumbent may be required to travel to countries within the region.
Duties and Responsibilities
Research for Development (R4D) Activities
- Establishment of field trials and demonstrations Work with research scientists and designated project partners to set-up research experiments, includingsite selection, farmer mobilization, interpretation of research protocols to field staff of Partner organisations, developing daily workplans, inputs distribution.
- Management of field trials: Responsible for trial monitoring, management of casual labour, student interns and liaison with field staff from collaborating/partner organisations.
- Collection and analysis of research information /samples Responsible for sampling, data collection of all R4D activities and primary data entries and assist in the laboratory analysis of research samples.
- Proposal devilment- Participate in developing the section's Research for Development (R4D) protocols.
Administrative duties
- Assist Research Scientists to develop Project workplans and budgets.
- Manage Project budgets and assets. He/she will be responsible for procuring field inputs and controlling operational expenses.
- Identify farmers' training requirements, with assistance from Government extension staff and Implementing Partners.
- Coordinate Government extension staff and Implementing Partners to organise farmer training courses, discussion days, field tours and field days.
- Compile information required for Project monitoring and evaluation.
- Compile field reports as directed by research staff.
Qualifications and Experience
- Master's Degree in livestock production.
- At least Minimum five years' experience in running on-farm livestock research and development projects.
- Minimum five years' experience in labour management and supervision.
- Clean Class 4 Driver's Licence is a requirement
- Computer literacy (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Experience in data analysis and knowledge of at least one statistical software package (e.g., SAS) will be an added advantage.
- Good writing and reporting skills.
- The incumbent must be a team player and be able to work independently.
- The selected candidate must be able to demonstrate the following competencies: Good interpersonal skills, communication skills, and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
