Job Summary

Africa University, a Pan African and United Methodist Church Related Institution in Zimbabwe, invites applications from suitably qualified and well experienced persons to fill the following strategic position: 

Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/ Professor in Soil Science Reporting to the Dean, the holder of this position in Soil Science is expected to spearhead teaching, research, transformative innovation and community service in all aspects of Soil Science and Soil Fertility Management. 

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Teaching of foundation and advanced courses in soil science and soil fertility to both undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students.
  • Develop teaching materials for various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in soil science and soil fertility management.
  • Work with the College team in the development of online programmes.
  • Supervise undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate research work and activities.
  • Develop and implement outreach programmes with Soil Fertility Management solutions in support of smallholder farmers to im-prove the productivity of agricultural farming systems.
  • Spearhead competitive research grant applications.
  • Conduct innovative research and commercialise the outputs in soil fertility related projects in line with the Education 5.0 thrust of Higher Education training.
  • Write research reports and make presentations on findings, including scientific research papers and non-scientific client reports.
  • Engage with the farming community in soil fertility management programmes that include providing fertilizer recommendations for the Soil Science Advisory Services of Africa University. Liaise with industry and other stakeholders regarding curricula, excursions, research and community empowerment projects.
  • Keep up to date with developments in soil science and related areas, as well as environmental issues and legislation changes that may affect academic programming.
  • Attend conferences, workshops and seminars to keep abreast of the latest developments and to network with people in the profes-sion and in related industries.
  • Have an impeccable record of academic leadership that will contribute to invigorating Departmental instruction, curricular innova-tion, and increased Departmental research productivity in line with the Education 5.0 thrust in Higher Education Training.

Qualifications And Responsibilities

  • A Doctorate degree from a recognized university in Soil Science or Soil Fertility
  • A Master's degree in Agriculture with specialisation in Soil Science or Soil Fertility.
  • A BSc (Hons) degree in Agriculture.
  • At least five years teaching experience at undergraduate, graduate or tertiary level and/or industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise student lab work, and conducting and publishing own research studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse gather, interpret and evaluate information about the chemistry, biology and physics of soil and using the information obtained from this analysis, to inform and influence on diverse issues such as: agricultural production; biodiversity; climate change; environmental quality; human health and land remediation.
  • A demonstrated track record of conducting relevant research and publishing in reputable, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Ability to mobilise resources through writing research and grant proposals independently
  • Ability to work as team and respect for cultural diversity.
  • Demonstrated record of academic leadership that will contribute to invigorating departmental instruction, curricular innovation, and increased Departmental research productivity in line with the Education 5.0 thrust in Higher Education Training.
