Job Description

The role will be overally responsible and accountable for implementing and enforcing established Old Mutual Limited (OML) Group Software Engineering Practice within the Old Mutual Zimbabwe Insurance and Banking businesses, ensuring maximal possible return on investment in software initiatives related to digital transformation. The role will have an additional reporting line into the OML Group Digital function.

  • Overseeing and Managing Software Engineering Economics, and Architecture Practice.
  • Overseeing and Managing Software Engineering Delivery Process Practice.
  • Overseeing and Managing Software Construction Process.
  • Overseeing and Managing Engineering Innovation. 
  • Nurturing engineering teams and Talent Management.
  • Lead Software Engineering Delivery Process Practice.
  • Lead Software Construction Practice.
  • Engineering Thought Leadership.
  • Strategy and Engineering Thought Leadership.
  • Engineering Management and Delivery.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electronic Engineering
  • 7+ years significant experience in full software engineering lifecycle within complex business environments – from feasibility and economic value analysis and concept definition, product design, through solution design evaluation and recommendation, cost estimation, sourcing and contract administration, construction and delivery management to deployment, maintenance and evolution.
  • Practical knowledge of software engineering economics
  • Practical knowledge of software engineering processes – particularly agile software engineering.
  • Practical knowledge in a wide range of software engineering productivity, and reusable tools and frameworks (particularly open source)  and their relative pros and cons–  automatic code generators, latest stable mobile and web programming frameworks; data integration automation tools; software test and deployment automation tools; and software infrastructure environments – particularly cloud environments such as Amazon Web Services
  • Practical knowledge of Complex Systems and Data Integration – standards, protocols, tools, methods, processes and best practices.
  •  Practical knowledge of business process modelling and workflow systems.
  • Practical knowledge of data engineering and big data technology systems.
  • A practical appreciation of machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies.
  • A strong people leader who can galvanize a team behind a strategic direction, with evidence of successfully delivering transformation.
  • Ability to lead collaboration and influence decision making.
  • Stakeholder and 3rd party management with strong communications skills.
