"It's Most Disheartening," President Mnangagwa Speaks On Ian Smith Comparison

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said it is disheartening to hear some young Zimbabweans arguing that it was better to live in Ian Smith’s Rhodesia than Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe and himself.

He made the remarks while presiding over the burial of Major General Rtd Sydney Bhebe at the National Heroes Acre in Harare this Monday.

Those who support the “Smith was better” argument say the ZANU PF government has failed to do better than what he did in terms of economic development and or championing human rights. In his speech earlier published by Pindula News, the president said:

It is most disheartening to hear some of our misinformed and misguided young people, peddling the grossly false narrative that life under Ian Smith was better than that, after Independence. The onus is on the older generation to constantly explain to the youth of our country that Ian Smith, and those present-day counter-revolutionaries with similar inclinations, personify the plunder and pillage of our motherland. These groups of unrepentant supremacists seek to make Zimbabwe a country where Africans are disenfranchised and turned into puppets for their elitist economic benefits. Such colonial-inspired capitalist domination, under whatever guise, will never be accepted in this country.

Lest we forget, the total independence, freedom, democracy and sovereignty we are enjoying as Zimbabwe, will never be sacrificed for any socio-political or economic expediency. This is what the National Hero we are laying to rest and other thousands of veterans of our liberation struggle fought for.

The racist excesses of the Rhodesian white settler regime were unbearable and fraught with the constant threat of death. It took strong-willed cadres in the mould of our National Hero, Major General Sydney Bhebhe, to endure the arduous journey that finally brought about our independence and freedom.

He added that every Zimbabwean has a sacred responsibility to jealously guard and defend the country in honour of the departed sons and daughters of the soil and also as a sacrosanct obligation to future generations.

I left this country via Nyamapanda to join the liberation struggle. I was frustrated by the rascist colonial gvt of one eyed Ian Douglas Smith. The whites were cruel. They kidnapped, imprisoned without trial, killed & maimed. They abhorred African nationalism & protected white interests. Smith was a totalitarian. His regime was almost a replica of apartheid. Yet in Zimbabwe ED is killing, arresting, imprisoning & maiming. ED is a dictator. ED hates different views. ED is a clone of Ian Douglas Smith. ED is a rabid rascist. But Smith in comparison provided jobs, descent education, excellent health services, and we had plenty food. The transport system was first class. Whilst Smith was equally rascist he was far much loved by his own ilk. Mnangagwa kills his own black people. Smith lived a modest life. He and his wife walked freely in first street and shopped in Woolworth. His shoes were polished by a short guy at what is now Edgars. If I had a choice I would not have gone to war. Smith wherever you are please come back.

I was disheartened to hear that His Excellency Advocate President ED Mnangagwa is being disheartened by those who say Smith was better than the late Robert Mugabe and himself. I am happy that he has proved that he is a listening President. I want to draw His Excellency back to PIERCE Commission of December 1970. I first worked in the Smith era in January 1974 after completing my Ordinary Level Examinations. Smith was also under sanctions, but he ran his economy better than what we are doing. He got help from South Africa to bust sanctions. Why do we not use the same means to bust sanctions by asking South Africa to help us ? In the Smith era Edison Sithole disappeared without a trace. In the Mugabe era, Rashiwe Guzha and Itai Dzamara disappeared without a trace. In those two administrations citizens were not given enough space to campaign. In this administration opposition political parties are not given enough space to campaign. Good example is CCC Political Party whose 5 rallies were cancelled for flimsy and fictitious reasons at the recently held byelections. I will not comment on cases which are at courts under this administration. In any case His Excellency, you proved that you are a listening President and will read such things as mine and ponder over them.

Yeee ED now knows it kuti Smith was better than him. Next elections Nelson Chamisa 3 453,980 votes and Emmerson Mnangagwa 923 054 votes. Therefore I Priscilla Makanyara Chigumba declare that Nelson Chamisa of Triple CCC is the duly elected president of Zimbabwe.

Judging by the comments herein at Pindula, it is a certainty that were Ian Douglas Smith alive today and decided to contest for Presidency in 2023, he would certainly garner more votes than ED and ZANU.

The plunder and pillage ED refers to is a typical boomerang. Smith did not plunder pillage this country. He developed it in spite of sanctions to be a robust growing economy. It is the post independence regime that has plundered and pillaged this country for personal agrandisement

Smith was being hated for being white apart from that his laws were in fever of white.Regardles his cabinet was good in running the Gvt .And at one point his gvt was fastest growing in Africa. Unlike the Gvt of Zanu . starting with corruption, theft and freedom of expression . furthermore torturing and killing of innocent civilizations. So of the two which one can say is better

Smith win the battle in this debate now we are moving on to Hitler and see which is which but we obviously know Hitler will win this again. These levels of being extravagant, incompetent and indelible corruption legacy, ignorence to workers demands, ignorence to education need, totally devastating health sectors and busy digging everywhere thinking it's development by implementing Plastic roads as well as giving Chinese and Russians a room to loot will come to an end soon. ED is an even a poor public peaker and he always speakk what he can't do but rely on speeches from his poor cabinet. Anokundwa kutonga na Chinotimba. Development bis a complex process ED food on the table must come first you Ediot

Malawi and Zambia was given their Independence in 1964. Zim was also supposed to be given their Independence in 1964 but was not. Smith fought a verbal war with Britain to try and persuade them to give Zim their Independence but Britain was not cooperative so Smith then was forced to declare unilaterally Independence in 11 Nov 1965 which angered Britain who then, with her allies, imposed economic sanctions and blockade on Rhodesia. South Africa was Rhodesias life line to survival. It was in 1979 that Britain and allies forced South Africa to force Smith to surrender to Britain otherwise the south African border was going to be closed leading to Rhodesias collapse.
Britain then regained governship of Rhodesia and organized elections in 1980 leading to zanupf's winning and causing pain and suffering for the next 42 years.
The war between Smith and Britain was won by Britain in 1979. 😂
