Here Is The List Of Basic Grocery Items To Be Imported Duty-free

The Government has suspended duty on a number of basic grocery items for the next six months with effect from 17 May 2022.

The development follows a statement by Minister of Finance and Economic Development Mthuli Ncube on Saturday where he announced that import tariffs selected products.

Ncube said the move would be aimed at ensuring that citizens have access to affordable basic grocery items in the wake of the recent increases in prices of locally manufactured products.

In a letter addressed to Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) Acting Commissioner-General, R Chinamasa, dated 16 May 2022, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, George Guvamatanga designated 15 products to be included under the new measures. The products are as follows:

  • Rice;
  • Flour,
  • Cooking Oil
  • Margarine;
  • Salt;
  • Sugar;
  • Maize meal;
  • Milk Powder;
  • Infants Milk Formula;
  • Tea, whether or not flavoured;
  • Petroleum Jelly;
  • Toothpaste;
  • Bath Soap;
  • Laundry Bar; and
  • Washing Powder.

Guvamatanga said that ZIMRA has been requested to urgently draft the necessary legal instrument and implement the duty suspension beginning midnight, that is, 17 May 2022, which should coincide with the gazetting of the relevant legislation.

He added the Ministry of Industry and Commerce is expected to complement the measure through the inclusion of the above goods on the Open General Import Licence.

The letter was also copied to Minister of Finance and Economic Development Mthuli Ncube, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Misheck Sibanda, Secretary for Industry and Commerce M Sibanda, and the Attorney General Prince Machaya.

Good response by the government in fighting economic saboteurs who are on a rampage, engaging in unexplained and unilateral price increases. However, demand for locally manufactured goods is set to nosedive as consumers migrate to imported products. Capacity utilization for our local industry could be dismally affected, resulting in many workers becoming redundant - and massive retrenchments will definitely follow. Sadly, the affected workers will most likely receive their "golden hand shakes" / retrenchment packages in the form of our precious and dominate (sic) RTGS$.
