Gwede Mantashe: Deal With Criminals, Not Zimbabweans

African National Congress (ANC) chairperson, Gwede Mantashe, has urged South Africans not to identify criminals by their nationality.

Speaking to News24 in Victoria Falls on Saturday, Mantashe, who is also South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, said crime knows no nationality. He said:

I always make the point at home and I will make it here: if a national from Zimbabwe commits a crime, he’s not a Zimbabwean, he’s a criminal. You must deal with criminals, not Zimbabweans, that’s my attitude.

… We have Zimbabweans from all walks of life in South Africa, they are in universities, they are in various institutions, they are CEOs of companies.

When people commit crimes in South Africa, they are not Zimbabweans, they are criminals.

When South Africans commit crimes in Zimbabwe, they are criminals.

On 6 April 2022, a Zimbabwean, Elvis Nyathi, was killed by vigilantes in Diepsloot, Johannesburg, for not having a passport.

Some South Africans blame foreigners for criminal conduct in their communities.

Mantashe admitted that his compatriots have a penchant for taking the law into their own hands. He said:

If you commit a crime in a community, the anger of the community would be informed by the extent of the crime.

Everybody who is doing the right thing in South Africa is safe.

Mantashe was in Zimbabwe to attend a meeting about the revival of the Pan African Minerals Development Corporation, a mining entity that brings together the governments of SA, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

Don't pretend to be a good person here and turn a vampire when you are around your people in SA. That's what you must tell your people in SA. If you mean your words, why letting that Lux go by preaching that foreigners especially Zimboz are criminals? If your word were coming from Julius Malema, I would salute you day in day out.

Gwede you are correct there Africa we are one family so.let us live like family. If we consider this issue for granted then tomorrow we will revenge the blood of our brothers which continue to shade from xenophobia am telling you one day some of the offsprings who their parents have been killed they will revenge. So the government of South Africa should take this case serious because us the future of Zimbabweans we will kill you like pigs ready for butcher we will braai you live. These killings has been happening for a long period just because we humans then our humanity has make us silent but doesn't mean we like it. Thank you Gwede for your concern then the Lord Creator of Heavenand Earth will cont not guilty of the blood she'd on your country. Here in Zimbabwe we are facing challenges of unemployment but we also have foreigners we treat them as our guest. So stop killing our brothers please we are the army commanders of tomorrow so attack is coming and it will be sour.
