Gukurahundi: People Need Development, Not Reminder Of Painful Things - Mpofu

ZANU PF secretary for administration, Obert Mpofu has said victims of the Gukurahundi killings do need development, not a reminder of their painful history.

Gukurahundi is a term used to refer to killings in Matabeleland and Midlands in the 1980s which resulted in the death of an estimated 20 000 people.

It was carried out by the North Korean trained 5th Brigade which was an elite regiment of the Zimbabwe Defence ForcesGukurahundi is derived from a Shona language term which loosely translates to “the early rain which washes away the chaff before the spring rains”.

The nation has so far failed to find an everlasting solution to the issue with the Unity Accord signed by Zimbabwe’s two major nationalist movements namely the Zimbabwe African People’s Union led by Joshua Nkomo and the Zimbabwe African National Union led by Robert Mugabe only managing the situation thus far.

Speaking in Jotsholo on Saturday, 28 May 2022 at the burial of a traditional leader, Chief Vusumuzi Khumalo Mabhikwa of Lupane, Mpofu said everyone talking about Gukurahundi was not a nation-builder. He said:

… abantu kabafuni ukuti babe lokuKhunjuzwa izinto ezibuhlungu bafuni intuthuko besiya phambili [people don’t want to be reminded of painful things, they want development going forward.]

Only when those responsible are held accountable for the genocide will the matter be put to rest.

This one is a disgrace to the ndebele community, a sellout. How can we move to the following chapter without closing the current one?. We cant ignore a murderer, we do not know what the future holds, what if they intend to murder again. Ndebele people are always fearing for their lives bcuz of gukurahundi. Growing up i always heard that if u go to bulawayo be careful, pple over there are very violent. But I now understand that it was caused by the govt. They are alert and ready to defend. Close that chapter ZANU PF!!

Obert Mpofu's comments are commendable, but occasions like Gukurahundi cannot be swept under the carpet. The only way to defuse the citizens anger is to speak openly about it, make good whatever must be made good and move on.

Correct me if I am wrong.
In saying that people who talk about Gukurahindi are not nation builder, I presume the corollary to what Obert Mpofu is saying is that those who perpetrated Gukurahundi were building the nation?

May the dear Lord have mercy upon your soul Obert.
