"Gukurahundi: Apology Without Truth-telling Won't Work"

Bulawayo-based pressure group, Ibhetshu Likazulu, has applauded chiefs for calling on the Government to apologise publicly over Gukurahundi but said an apology alone won’t be enough to bring closure to the issue.

On Friday, Matabeleland South provincial Chiefs assembly chairperson Chief Masendu advised President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government to apologise for the Gukurahundi massacres.

Ibhetshu Likazulu Coordinator Mbuso Fuzwayo said a victim-centred approach should be adopted in dealing with the sensitive issue for there to be closure. He said:

It is good now that Chiefs are putting their demands to the government concerning the Gukurahundi issue, but l think an apology alone without truth-telling, commission or anything that is not victim-centred is not going to bring closure to the genocide. Apology before acknowledgement will certainly not work.

Fuzwayo also lauded the traditional leaders for condemning the latest destruction of the Gukurahundi memorial plaque at Bhalagwe in Maphisa in the province.

The destruction of the plaque, which occurred on 4 January this year, was the third in two years. Fuzwayo said:

When Chiefs deplore such barbaric behaviour, it also gives confidence to the people that their leaders are with them.

Mind you, people have sacrificed their scarce resources to mount the plague, but someone just decide to destroy all that with impunity.

Again, we applaud the Chiefs for that but they should go further and demand the cessation of such wayward behaviour in future.

Mnangagwa, who was State Security Minister during the atrocities, in spite of opening dialogue on the matter, has not offered any apology for the mass killings just like his predecessor, the late Robert Mugabe.

Critics have described Mnangagwa’s attempts to redress the conflict as insincere.

I HAVE ALWAYS SAID IT AND I AM REPEATING IT THAT GUKURAHUNDI WAS TWO WAY TRAFFIC ALTHOUGH THE OTHER ONE, SECURITY FORCES, WENT A GEAR UP.

YES, THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION MUST HEAR EVIDENCE OF ATROCITIES FROM BOTH SIDES, THOSE WHOSE BELOVED ONES WERE BUTCHERED BY THE DISSIDENTS AND THOSE WHOSE RELATIVES WERE BUTCHERED BY SECURITY FORCES.

YES, DISSIDENTS KILLED, RAPED AND TORCHED PEOPLE'S HOMES TOO. THEREFORE THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION MUST HEAR EVIDENCE FROM BOTH SIDES.

WE MUST HAVE AN END TO THIS GUKURAHUNDI ATROCITIES THING. WE CAN NOT KEEP IT HANGING OVER OUR HEADS FOR GOOD.

I BEG TO DIFFER FROM THOSE OF OUR WORTHWHILE COLLEAGUES WHO SAY GUKURAHUNDI WAS SETTLED WHEN DR NKOMO AND MR MUGABE FORMED AN AGREEMENT IN 1987. THESE TWO MAGNANIMOUS LEADERS FOUND AND AGREED ON THE WAY TO STOP THE WAR AND INDEED THEY STOPPED THE WAR.

THEY NEVER SAT DOWN TO LOOK AT THE DAMAGE THE DISSIDENTS/GUKURAHUNDI WAR HAD CAUSED AND TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE. THIS IS NOW THE PURPOSE OF HAVING THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION, TO ESTABLISH THE DAMAGE THE DISSIDENTS/GUKURAHUNDI WAR CAUSED AND HOW TO RECONCILE THOSE WHOSE RELATIVES WERE KILLED AND RAPED BY DISSIDENTS AND THOSE WHOSE RELATIVES WERE KILLED BY SECURITY FORCES.

IN OTHER WORDS, I AM SAYING NKOMO AND MUGABE LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE PROCESS. THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION IS THE BODY AND FINAL STAGE OF WHOLE PROCESS.

IT IS TRUE, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN THAT WE NEED A TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION AT WHICH BOTH VICTIMS OF DISSIDENT ATROCITIES AND VICTIMS OF SECURITY FORCES ARE CALLED TO NARRATE THEIR EXPERIENCES.

THIS NOTION WHICH WAS IMPLANTED IN OUR MINDS THAT ONLY NDEBELES WERE KILLED IN THAT WAR IS NOT TRUE. SHONAS WERE ALSO KILLED AND I AM NOT ALLEGING THAT THEY WERE KILLED BY DISSIDENTS ONLY, BUT SOME BY SECURITY FORCES TOO.

REMEMBER ZIPRA FORCES HAD OPERATED IN BINGA, GOKWE, ZVIMBA, HURUNGWE AND GURUVE. BANDITRY ACTIVITIES WERE RECORDED IN BINGA, ZVIMBA, SANYATI AND HURUNGWE. MODUS OPERANDI USED BY SECURITY FORCES IN MATABELELAND WAS THE SAME MODUS OPERANDI { METHOD OF OPERATION } WHICH THEY USED IN THESE SHONA SPEAKING AREAS.

{PROPOPULO, PROPATRIA, PROLEGE}.

HAPACHISINA CHEKUTAURA. KWAKAITWA NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WHICH WAS FORGIVE AND FORGET ZVIKATOVHARANA. ZANU NEZAPU ZVIKABATANA. PLEASE DON'T FORGET THAT THESE NDEBELE DISSIDENTS WERE KILLING THE SHONA. THEY HAD BECOME REBELS. THEY WANTED TO MAKE MATABELELAND A NEW COUNTRY OF ITS OWN. JOSHUA NKOMO WAS BUSY SENDING THEM TO KILL INNOCENT AND UNARMED SHONA PEASENTS. WHY ARE THE NDEBELE TRYING TO PRETEND AS IF THEY WERE THE VICTIMS? MUGABE DEALT WITH THE SITUATION LIKE ANY other PRESIDENT WOULD HAVE. LOOK AT WHAT'S HAPPENING IN MOZAMBIQUE. SOON THOSE REBELS WILL START PLAYING THE VICTIM

They should also apologise for what dissidents did as well this was not a one sided affair.

Elyse 4 months ago

Yes, they should do that...but they will tell you it was Nkomo😂.
These matebele people are being agitated by some external force.I wish they will not regret it in the near future

Guys pane chinhu one chamisingazive ED will never ever admit to those atrocities because they will lend him in prison so Never. Apology anogona ku offer but not a direct apology. Once He admits to be part of the genocide guys things will turn against him. So Never He won't. Infact he will give an excused apology. It's either gonna be like they were going after a Terrorist group that had risen. Its never gonna be a pure sorry

@Elyse, you're spot on ! During Mugabe's era , there was freedom of speech but there was no guarantee for freedom after speech.

Elyse 4 months ago

Every soldier, minister and government official who was involved in that incident must not be forced to apologize. It is Robert Gabriel Mugabe who was supposed to admit and apologize to matebele people. All the actions done were done on the instruction of RGM.It was mwana waBOna who had power to protect!I get a bit irritated when people try to exonerate mugabe from all the ills of this country yet he ruled for 37 out of 41 years of this country. It is Robert Gabriel Mugabe the late! Let it sink in everyone's skull.
They were not saying this when he was in power because they knew he would deal with them.Uku kutokwanisa kutaura taura I evidence of freedom of speech.RGM would not give you freedom of speech and after speech kkk maidashurwa
