Govt Sets Aside $17 Billion For 2022 Road Works

The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) will disburse $17 billion for roadworks programmes for over 2 000 urban and rural roads.

More than 10 000km are expected to undergo reconstruction under the ongoing Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme 2 (ERRP2) this year.

The roadworks programme will be undertaken primarily by the Department of Roads (DoR), local authorities and the District Development Fund (DDF).

Transport and Infrastructural Development secretary Engineer Theodius Chinyanga said:

Initially, we wanted $30 billion, however, due to budget constraints, we had to cut the budget by almost half.

However, we will prioritise our major roads and continue from where we left last year.

We will mainly cover pothole patching in urban areas as well as resurfacing of areas that have been excessively damaged over the years.

In Harare Metropolitan province, 45 roads have been identified for immediate attention while in Bulawayo Province, 40 roads will be rehabilitated and new others will be constructed in Cowdray Park’s Hlalani Kuhle area projects.

Other provinces will also receive their allocations for roadworks under the ERRP, which started last year and is expected to run for 36 months.
