Gender Commission Probes 'Sex For Games' ZIFA, Female Referees Scandal

Gender Commission Probes 'Sex For Games' ZIFA, Female Referees Scandal

The Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) has commenced investigations into alleged sexual harassment, sexual abuse and exploitation of women in football.

This comes after the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) suspended the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) board led by Felton Kamambo on a litany of allegations including failure to investigate the allegations of sexual abuse of female referees.

SRC chairperson Gerald Mlotshwa on Thursday told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee for Sport that since the suspension of the ZIFA board on 16 November 2021, the commission has discovered more cases of sexual harassment against female referees. He said:

Initially, we had three complaints of sexual harassment but investigations revealed that sexual harassment was insidious. There was sex for games. Sleep with me and I will give you a game.

ZGC chairperson Commissioner Margaret Sangarwe-Mukahanana commended the women who were brave enough to open up on sexual abuse and harassment in the football sector considering that such issues involve stigmatisation and intimidation. Said Sangarwe-Mukahanana:

The complaints indicate the prevalence of endemic discrimination and dehumanisation of women within the football refereeing and the entire football sector as emanating from the fact that for years, the sector has been an enclave of men with limited participation of women.

The facts indicate the prevalence of gender rights violations like sexual abuse, sexual harassment, sexual exploitation and extortion in form of sex for selection, such conduct hinders female participation and performance in sports.

She appealed to members of the public with information or complaints of sexual harassment, sexual abuse and exploitation within the football structures to make submissions to the Zimbabwe Gender Commission.

What took them so long to investigate when the complaints were laid last year in November. Zimbabwe Gender Commission has for long been used as a weapon, whilst, it has been ignoring real issues; on 1 August 2018, women were brutalised and killed by heavily armed soldiers, they never investigated or said anything. In January 2019, women told stories of being raped by soldiers during the crackdown on the fuel price hikes protests, and the Gender Commission maintained silence like a church mouse. The MDC trio was abducted and brutalised, they never said anything, Mary, Chiwenga's ex-wife, has been harassed ever since her divorce from the Vice President. All these issues ought to have been addressed by the ZGC, and some recommended for prosecution, but they did not do so. Now they are onto ZIFA, I am guessing those complaints were concocted to make ZIFA Executives look bad before they unlawfully suspending then, but things did not go down SRC's way in the wake of the FIFA ban so they have roped in ZGC to legitimize their case against ZIFA. All of this is in vain as FIFA will only lift the ban when the ZIFA board has been reinstated.

Executive ye ZIFA under Kamambo are being persecuted because they defeated Philip Chiyangwa unexpectedly. Chiyangwa never thought that he will be defeated and he had used his corrupt nature to get positions in caf & cosafa. Now he suffered a big blow at home he is now using his political power in disguise of SRC to get rid of Kamambo and team.Im not saying Kamambo is innocent on the said allegations. But pple of Zim already know it better on how to choose between dirty water and clear acid for their thirst. This here gentlemen and ladies is the real issue affecting our football as a nation. ZIFA EMPLOYEE

it was long overdue,, what took the gender commission so long ,since November when it was brought into public domain

Maravaza 5 months ago

There is no need for a gender commission to investigate this case, this is a mere police case that can be proffesionally investigated by a police constable in Mbare. This is just a looting commision. Victims should have reported their cases to the police ,simple.

After a long time of hearing about this issue, after the SRC has failed to convince FIFA with the issue, those who should have voiced and brought the 'evidence' to assist the SRC before it got involved come out months after the issue came out, long enough for the 'abused' women referees should have given birth or have got sick. Women should always act quickly and protect each other from the insecure 'powerful' men. I would also challenge these particular women to get dignity for some of the women who the press and social media say are suffering from the rich and powerful men.
