FULL TEXT: "Silent From Mugabe's Era, Artists Won't Be Silent This Time," - Actress

Precious Musarurwa, Labour Economists and African Democrats (LEAD) Secretary-General and Harare East Aspiring Member of Parliament, has said “artists will not be silent this time” and will be participating actively in political and governance discourses. She speaks as fellow artists, Sanii Makhalima and Seh Calaz have openly announced that they are backing opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa. The revelations attracted backlash from some quarters but they remained adamant and Musarurwa has joined the bandwagon. Pindula News presents an unaltered article by Musarurwa:

For long artists have tried to let their voices be heard but the political arena from Mugabe times could not allow that association. So yes we were silent.

As a film scriptwriter, writing about the reality in our politics was taboo as one would face political hurdles along the way. I could observe, learn and keep silent. The reason I was silent to speak out directly on politics is because of fear of victimization by politicians. Then one would be victimized for aligning with the then opposition MDC.

The struggle is real. These politicians won’t spare you when they know your affiliation politically but it is everyone’s democratic right to associate and express oneself.

The banter by Biti, a legislator and long time representative of the people leaves one wondering if he is for all or just power. There was a time artists were silent so much that the likes of Hopewell were screaming for their voices. Now each artist who is seen with a politician or who shows off his or her allegiance is a sellout.

We are used to these abusive experiences coming from ZANU PF, the first republic. Now, if Biti whom I voted for in 2018, is seen disregarding artists for accepting to provide their services to another party, I become worried, and sure that I was right to challenge him.

Biti just reminded me of that ZANU youth, Tafadzwa Mugwadi, who provokes everyone and everything that’s not on his side. In a country with such leaders that provoke and never push for peaceful mobilization but create war zones, Zimbabwe is far from healing.

Biti has had it all. The time and chance to motivate these artists he now calls sellouts but how has he performed in his constituency?

He has been in party leadership from MDCT, MDC ALLIANCE, PDP, and now CCC in the past 22 years of his political career. Has he upraised any artist? To what level?

Yes, Biti can articulate well and has information but what has he achieved to function to fruition as a legislator?

Many laws are not yet aligned with our Constitution yet we have legislators that go on strike, fight each other in parliament and that work to thwart each one’s contributions.

We need more political representatives in parliament for accountability and collective submissions. Not these two that have failed to ensure peace, and reconciliation at our expense.
