Former Deputy Minister Mutodi Calls For Cabinet Reshufle

A former Deputy Minister of Information, Dr Energy Mutodi, has called upon President Emmerson Mnangagwa to reshuffle Cabinet as a way of restoring public confidence in the government and state institutions.

Mutodi was commenting on measures that were announced on 7 May 2022 by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in his State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Among other measures, he announced the suspension of lending by banking institutions, building societies, development finance institutions, deposit-taking and credit-only microfinance institutions to the Government and private sector and also reversed a ban on private-owned kombis and buses.

He also announced that depositors who lost their money due to the reintroduction of the Zimbabwe dollar in June 2019 will be compensated.

The measures have been criticised by some economists and opposition Citizens Coalition for Change. Commenting on the measures, Mutodi said:

President ED Mnangagwa measures to address exchange rate driven inflation are a step in the right direction. However, Professor Mthuli Ncube needs help and a whole Cabinet reshuffle is necessary in order to instil public confidence in the government.

Opposition CCC says public confidence was killed by corruption by government officials and the government’s “failure” to provide public goods and services.

Mutodi was fired in May 2020 for disrespecting senior party officials among them his then boss Information Minister Senator Monica Mutsvangwa and then Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Sibusiso Moyo.

After 42 years of failure confidence will be difficult to restore. Reshuffling dead wood will not fix the problems. We need new leadership.
