Five ZINWA Employees Suspended For Illegal Water Connections

The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has suspended five employees over illegal water connections in Monde Village near Victoria Falls.

ZBC News’ Tichaona Kurewa reports that the pipeline from the City of Victoria Falls to the Airport was meant to supply water to the airport, although a few villagers in Monde Village were later connected.

As the settlement grew, ZINWA could not incorporate all the new homesteads which then saw villagers being connected illegally by some corrupt officials.

ZINWA spokesperson Mrs Marjorie Munyonga revealed that they have since moved in to address the situation by removing all illegal connections. Said Munyonga:

I can confirm that we have suspended five employees for allegedly connecting people along the pipeline, unfortunately I cannot say much as disciplinary hearings are going on at the moment. There are suspicions that our employees were in connivance with some people along the pipeline and these have been suspended and we are conducting disciplinary hearings and we hope to conclude the issue as soon as possible.

Monde Village Head Mthandazo Mpala said everyone involved in the scandal must be arrested. He said:

All connections be it power, water or telephones must be done legally.

ZINWA is a wholly Government-owned entity formed in 2000 with the mandate to sustainably and efficiently plan, develop and manage the country’s water resources.
