FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, Speaks On ZIFA Suspension

The FIFA Congress on Thursday overwhelmingly voted for the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) to remain suspended from international football.

The FIFA Congress, which is a meeting of FIFA’s member states, in Doha, Qatar, voted for the suspension of Zimbabwe, Kenya and Pakistan.

FIFA president, Gianni Infantino introduced a motion to endorse Zimbabwe’s suspension and a total of 199 members voted in support while only two members, presumably Pakistan and Qatar, voted against the motion.

Nine other members thought to be COSAFA members – South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique, Malawi, Lesotho, eSwatini, Angola and Namibia abstained.

Infantino said ZIFA’s suspension will be lifted when the ZIFA board, led by Felton Kamambo, is reinstated. Said, Infantino:

FIFA Council suspended Zimbabwe Football Association on February 24, 2022, with immediate effect due to third party interference, in particular the takeover of the ZIFA football activities by a ‘so-called’ restructuring committee appointed by the Government after the latter’s executive committee and the general secretary had been suspended which constituted a violation of the FIFA Statutes.

We, therefore, recommended that Congress confirms this suspension of ZIFA, enabling also the Council to lift the suspension once the pertinent requirements have been fulfilled.

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), which suspended the ZIFA board, appointed a restructuring committee that will serve the functions of the ZIFA committee, but this was rejected by FIFA.

What does the suspension mean for Zimbabwean football?

Zimbabwe will not be allowed to participate in any international football activities.

This means that the Warriors could miss out on qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Local football clubs will be barred from representing the country in continental competitions.

Zimbabwe will also miss out on the annual cash injection from FIFA, around US$8 million in a four-year period.

SADC countries are in part the reason why Zanu PF has always been doing whatever it wants with no consequences. They should all pay for being enablers of this repressive regime

SADC countries as always-they abstain. As far as Zimbabwe and Zimbabweans are concerning SADC's stance is hameno ikoko, rega zvitsviremo mutea pot shapped country imomo. They will never condemn anything that seems to contradict ZANUPF stance even if it is wrong.

A true toothless bulldog indeed. They should realize that we see their actions as just as bad as Zanu PF so when judgement day comes we'll never show them mercy

I am begining to think that SRC truly does have nothing legal to use against Kamambo. If they had, they could have boldly ensured that he is prosecuted and incerated. But V11, mukuwasha waED haana. It is political onslaught against Kamambo.

And even Kamambo's boldness proves the same. I mean, why not just take evidence iri clean and clear before FIFA or even us as football loving citizens. Kuita KUKAKARITSANA naKamambo so kkkk. Tinyarei.

We were made to believe it is Kamambo and his team vari wrong but l think there is more than meets the eye and hits the ear. Uku kunenge kwaibiwa mari uku nemapoliticians like Chiyangwa as is alleged.

Anyway, pasi nenepotism and corruption. Pasi nekuuraya soccer in Zimbabwe. Change is inevitable. Citizens' Coalition for Change to the fullest. Dream Team yakapfeka all yellow_gaya.

The first son in law and chairman of Sports and Recreation Commission said that the suspension of Zimbabwe from FIFA is immaterial. He in essence is trying to grab the limelight for the wrong reasons. His standpoint is at variance with millions of soccer loving Zimbabweans. Nepotistic appointments serve only to assuage the ego of his father in law but in the long term it will cost Zimbabwe greatly. Suspension from world football has profound impact for national teams, clubs and players. All this to the former rugby official is nothing, all he knows and cares for is rugby.

This is what you get when you interfere with the running of football. The ball is now in SRC's court, they have to do the right thing - capitulate - because this suspension will have devastating effects.
