EU, Netherlands Denounce MDC-A Duo's Continued Incarceration

The European Union (EU) and the Netherlands have both condemned the continued incarceration of MDC Alliance activists Joanna Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri.

In a tweet this Saturday on the Twitter handle, @euinzim, the EU condemned what it calls the selective application of the law by Zimbabwean courts. It said:

Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri have been denied bail again this week. Their continued incarceration violates their rights and illustrates what human rights defenders have described repeatedly as a selective application of the law in #Zimbabwe.

In a related development, the Dutch Embassy, in a tweet on Friday, expressed concern over the treatment of Mamombe and Chimbiri by Zimbabwean courts. The post read:

Concerned by the continued incarceration of Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri over charges of breaking COVID-19 regulations.

Their case reflects the selective application of the law in Zimbabwe, as reported by local #HumanRights organizations.

Mamombe were on Thursday denied bail by High Court judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi on their latest charges.

The duo is remanded in custody on charges of breaching lockdown regulations by addressing a press conference at the Harare Magistrates Court.

In his ruling Justice Chitapi said it was evident that tough bail conditions would not prevent the two from engaging in unlawful conduct.
