Conductor Arrested For Trying To Bribe Police Officers

A conductor has been arrested after trying to bribe a police officer with an R100 at a roadblock along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge highway.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) say the arrest was effected on Sunday the 5th of June 2022 by the National Taskforce deployed in Beitbridge on the operation, “No to cross border crimes.”

A police report says the conductor, Given Siwela (24) offered the Police ZAR 100 bribe after the driver of a Toyota Hiace he was travelling in was arrested for failure to register a trailer and failure to have a current vehicle licence.

Meanwhile, 211 people were arrested countrywide during the operation, “No to cross border crimes.” Under the operation, 157 458 people have been arrested so far.

Some observers say police only arrest when the offered bribe is too small “to quench officers’ thirst.”

Cross border crimes, especially smuggling, increased along the Limpopo river and Beitbridge border after Zimbabwe and South Africa closed the border as a strategy to curb the transmission of the coronavirus.
