Chivhu Granted Town Status

Chivhu Centre now has a Town Board which will operate independently of Chikomba Rural District Council (RDC).

The Chivhu Town Board will have its creditors and debtors separated from Chikomba RDC.

The development was revealed in a letter to the local authority from the Minister of Local Government and Public Works July Moyo.

The letter states that the Chivhu Town Board will be responsible for managing and leading developments in Chivhu Centre. Part of the letter reads:

In terms of section 57 of the Rural District Council Act (Chapter 29:13), I hereby appoint Chivhu Centre as a Town Board.

The Town Board will be responsible for managing and leading development in Chivhu Centre.

Moyo appointed the team that will do the assessments to assist the local authority to operationalise the Town Board Committee. The team was given 10 days to complete the task.

The team will assist in the distribution of assets between the RDC and the Town Board.

It will also allocate staff and come up with modalities for sharing of costs that are cross-cutting, separate creditors and debtors and ascertain the boundary of the Town Board, among other things.

There will also be a nomination process for members to compose the Town Board Committee other than elected councillors.

Chikomba RDC chairman Israel Dhikinya welcome the granting of town status to Chivhu, saying it signals the growth of Chivhu.

Chikomba residents and Ratepayers Alliance Chairman told The Mirror that he is happy with the development.
