Chiefs Blame Poverty For Fuelling Up Child Marriages

Chiefs Blame Poverty For Fuelling Up Child Marriages

President of the National Chiefs Council, Fortune Charumbira, said child marriages and teenage pregnancies are fuelled by poverty.

Charumbira made the comments while speaking at a regional traditional leaders’ meeting in Harare on Monday.

The meeting, which was attended by chiefs from several African countries, was organised by Plan International and aimed at encouraging chiefs to address and end early child marriages in Africa. Said Charumbira:

It is important that as stakeholders here gathered, we come up with solutions that address related issues such as female genital mutilation, teenage pregnancies and more importantly poverty.

I know there are some who blame culture and tradition when it comes to child marriages, however, we should not ignore the contribution of poverty to this scourge.

Because of poverty, some parents have been marrying off their children at a tender age for the bride price payment.

Sadly, such unions usually result in the disruption of education and increase the girl’s vulnerability to abuse, discrimination and gender-based violence.

First Centre of Excellence on Ending Child Marriages for the Middle East, Eastern and Southern Africa regional programmes manager Lynn Chinene said:

This project has been targeting traditional leaders as they are the custodians of culture and tradition to stop retrogressive social norms that push for child marriages. Children have to be children and not brides at a young age.

at least a person who marries is better than the one who sleeps and impregnates her thereafter he disappears or disowns responsibility.

Blame it on culture. African gals mature very early you know at 12 she would be showing some strong ****ual feelings. Yes you can ban their marriages but not their ****ual p****ions and indulgence.

OUR CULTURE AND ROTTEN SOCIAL SPHERES ARE TO BLAME FOR ALL THIS..STARTING WITH LOBOLA (BASICALLY THE SALE OF FEMALE CHILDREN TO THEIR GROOMS IN ORDER TO MAKE CASH)

AND WHY IN THE 21st CENTURY ARE CHIEFS STILL REIGHNING SUPPREME OVER INNOCENT PEOPLE..THIS IS ILLEGAL ,BACKWARD AND POISONOUS. THESE UNEDUCATED CRIMINALS ARE DEGRADING THE COUNTRY'S EMAGE

THEY USE POVERTY AS AN EXCUSE (A SCRAPEGOAT) IN ORDER TO CARRY OUT THESE ILLEGAL AND CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES...POVERTY IS NOTHING NEW IN ZIMBABWE..WE HAVE LIVED IN POVERTY SINCE OUR EXISTANCE.

DESTROY THESE CHIEFDOMS AND INTRODUCE PROPER CIVILISATION PLEASE...RULE BASED ORDER AND DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED LEADERS..

Blah Blaah Blaaah Blabbering Blabber. Traditional Chiefs are supposed to be custodians of the african culture, not of the Zanu pf regime wich continues to ruin the economy causing absolute poverty. They enjoy undesered benefits, which they use to abuse children, like the Musarurwa case and when it comes to elections they chase away polling agents in support of the Ruining party, and their primitive Pfubvunza farming method. These Chiefs are useless and are serving no purpose at all. Even during the colonial error, vaingo supporter the oppressive regime. The only chief worth his salt is His Royal Highness Chief Ndiweni, vamwe vese fokoro.

Enlighten me which culture of “ours” encourages child marriages? Unless i am mistaken, i dont see anywhere in the article where it says chiefs are supporting child marriages. The Chief was just stating a fact, and it is a fact that poverty is one of the drivers of early child marriages. If there instances where chiefs are doing illegal things thats wrong, they are supposed to be guided by the traditional leaders act, and to carryout their duties ethically and in respect of individual rights. However, just because there are rotten apples im that system does not mean a whole system serving a purpose should be destroyed totally. Go to the rural areas and the people there will tell you that they want the traditional leadership system as it serves a purpose in their rural society, and gives their community order. You sir are driven purely by prejudice and lack of first hand knowledge. Clearly you are the town born and raised person who has not had first hand experience of the rural life. And u seem to be deluded that everything thats african and to do with our culture is backward and uncivilised. And who said chiefs reign supreme? They are guided by the principles of law, if u dont agree with their verdicts one is always free to appeal to a higher court i.e the magistrates court and so on...
