Ceiling Collapses On Patients At Parirenyatwa Hospital

Ceiling Collapses On Patients At Parirenyatwa Hospital

Zimbabwe’s biggest referral hospital, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, has confirmed social media reports that a ceiling at the institution collapsed on Tuesday morning and injured two patients.

In a statement on Tuesday afternoon, the hospital said the two patients, who were receiving treatment in a ward, suffered minor injuries. It said:

We have come across social media reports of an accident in our hospital. We would like to confirm the occurrence of an unfortunate incident in the Physician’s Bay today (13/09/22) in the early hours of the morning.

A small part of the ceiling in one of the cubicles unexpectedly fell on two of the patients under observation in the cubicle. Both patients were immediately examined by our doctors.

They sustained minor injuries and got appropriate treatment. The patients were eventually discharged home following the completion of their initial observations.

We would like to unreservedly apologise to the affected patients and their families. The hospital has already started the process of repairing the ceiling.

We will revoke licenses of all private health institutions that do not meet safety standards expected by the ministry of health which put the lives of patients at risk. We encourage the public to jave faith in government health institutions as they are regularly inspected and are safe for our patients. These gvt hospitals include the largest referal hospital Parirenyatwa group of hospitals, Mpilo hospital and others dotted around the provinces. Thank you.

Accidents always happen! Wherever you are it might be at home or at work, is there not a scenario were an accident can occur. Don't politicize every situation. Be positioned for your own advancement!

ED Pfee 2023 Guys!

@Machiavelli: Insurance classifies falling ceilings as an accident.Main causes are turbulence in the space above the ceiling. There maybe warning signs eg cracks or sometimes the ceiling will collapse without any warning.

@Adjudicator, in management there is the principle of preventative maintenance. Accidents happen, but when accidents because of lack of preventive management, then you have systemic failure.

This is a prime example of systemic failure, not accident. Thus isn't an isolated incident.

* traffic lights don't work and we have automotive accidents
* bridges collapse because we don't have quality control
* tarmacadamised toads develop potholes soo after completion - again systemic failure
* You advance US$5 million to Wicknell Chivhayo, he does nothing, and he sues ZESA for US$22 million
* You run down health facilities and people cross the Limpopo for Medicare, and you blame Phophi Ramathuba for crying out

Please @Adjudicator if you have a brain don't tell us about ED for 2023

My heart bleeds because I saw Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals when it was still known as Andrew Fleming Group of Hospitals. I first visited this renowned hospital complex while on duty in 1979.

Andrew Fleming Group of Hospitals was a marvel to watch. The Group of Hospitals composed of a maternity hospital with several wards, a dentist Hospital with its departments and the main wing, namely Andrew Fleming Hospital.

If you visit this formerly flamboyant hospital today, you shade tears. Everything is delapidating. One would not imagine a situation where a ceiling would rot unnoticed till it falls on patients !!!!! Oh help me God Jehovah.

[ THIS SO CALLED SECOND ADMINISTRATION HAS PUT OUR HEALTHCARE IN TARTARS ].

Whatever infrastructure was inherited and renamed, just like the roads, need preventative maintenance, not to wait until it breaks or harms people. We have even seen donors doing maintenance to the Great Zimbabwe Ruins.

Maparamuro 2 months ago

Accidents do happen sometimes even whole buildings collapse with fatal consequences but this one is a result of negligence and the ministry should take full responsibility.
Public buildings like hospitals should undergo regular inspections for any faults that develop due to various reasons. This incident is a clear indication the ministry is not doing these inspections.
Lack of maintenance of public infrastructure is prevalent everywhere you go. Trees growing on railway lines, makorokoza digging under railway lines causing the lines to collapse, trees growing under electricity power lines, potholes on all roads. It's all pure negligence by gvt because it does not care about the people who use these infrastructure
