CCC Accuses ZEC Of Frustrating Youths Trying To Register

CCC has accused the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) of frustrating youths trying to register to vote ahead of the 2023 elections.

Addressing journalists in Harare on Thursday last week, CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said ZEC is turning away youths intending to register on “flimsy” grounds. Said Mahere:

The narrative that young people don’t want to vote is a myth. We have gone to the ground and, in fact, when we mobilise youth to vote, the first thing they say is we don’t have identity cards. Youths are extremely key.

We know that there is a voter registration suppression strategy by ZEC that prevents youths from voting in next year’s elections.

Youths are one of the most affected people in this country as they do not have jobs.

Youths are being given flimsy excuses when they want to register. They will be told there is no electricity, our machines are not operating and we are refurbishing the building.

These are the obstacles youths are facing and we are blaming ZEC for the low turnout of people who are registering to vote.

Just to drive my point home, have you heard of any ZEC campaign on the radio or on ZBC encouraging people to vote?

Zimbabwe Election Advocacy Trust (ZEAT) executive director Ignatious Sadziwa said ZEC was being mischievous and should be disbanded. He said:

ZEC is notorious for failing to meet its constitutional obligations. It’s high time we rethink its composition. It’s high time ZEC should be disbanded.

It is a mischievous ploy by ZEC to frustrate youths and youths constitute a large chunk of the population and it’s very unfortunate that they are being turned away.

According to the Constitution, ZEC should be neutral and fair and everyone should be given an opportunity to register to vote.

According to statistics released by ZEC last month, as of 10 June, the country’s registered voters numbered 5 804 975, a 2% increase from 5 695 706 in 2018.

If citizens are entering an election which is run by a board they do not trust, it means, ab initio, those elections are in despite.

In such situations, the best to do is to disband that board, ZEC, and reconstitute it. As long as we continue running our Elections under ZEC, we will continue to have disputed elections. I do not see what is so special about Mai Priscilla Chigumba. She can go back to the bench [ High Court Judge ] and replace her with another High Court judge.

I want to urge CCC political party to continue lobbying the youths to go and register to vote. They must not tire. ZEC may be operating under strict and unlawful instructions to frustrate the youths from registering and eventually from voting. Youths is an important constituency.

CCC is not ready for election as it is always mourning about this and that ,in essence we do not haveca n opposition party. The party has many brilliant young lawyers including Chamisa himself but they behave just like ordinary people.

The party needs to take the legal route if it is not happy about anything.People are getting demoralised by this whining and mourning.

Get them youths to make a class action against ZEC and SE what happens.
stop whining .We are tired.
Register and Vote.

@Sir African, please clarify.
When you say "We are tired" Iwewe nani?
Unless you're a legal persona (which I doubt because I have never heard of an organisation called Sir African), then use singular (I).

As for the rest, you are neither a spokesperson for CCC to vouch for its electoral readiness or not.

Furthermore you have not advanced any credible evidence to suggest that Chamisa and/or snybLegal person in CCC "is (behaving) like ordinary people" I find it ludicrous that you seem to insinuate that Lawyers are not ordinary people.

You seem to suggest that that the legal route is the sine qua non of every problem. Let me suggest to you that there are other processes such as political, electoral, extra-judicial routes that are also open.

In the same vein, I take umbrage with your statement "People are getting demoralised ". No proof, evidence nor locus standing is availed to validate that claim.
