The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a tragic accident that resulted in the death of two people and injuries to six others. The incident occurred on the Rutenga-Zvishavane road when a Toyota Fun Cargo, a small car designed for commuting and carrying up to five passengers, veered off the road, overturned, and landed on its left side. The car was reported to have been carrying 12 passengers, exceeding its intended capacity.
The ZRP released a statement regarding the accident, stating that two individuals lost their lives, while six others sustained injuries. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Zvishavane District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations, and the injured individuals were admitted to the same hospital for treatment. Four passengers fortunately escaped unharmed. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the police said:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident in which two people were killed whilst six others were injured when a Toyota Fun Cargo vehicle with 12 passengers on board veered off the road before overturning and landing on its left side at the 140 kilometre peg along Rutenga-Zvishavane Road on 17/02/2024 at around 2010 hours. The other four passengers escaped unhurt. The bodies of the victims are at Zvishavane District Hospital mortuary for post mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.

Concerns were raised by commentators regarding the number of passengers in the vehicle, with some suggesting that transport operators may be bribing police officers to allow overloaded vehicles to pass through roadblocks unchecked. The situation has sparked frustration and sadness among the public, as precious lives continue to be lost in such accidents. Questions were raised about how a Toyota Fun Cargo, designed for a maximum of five passengers, could carry 12 individuals. There were also allegations that overloaded vehicles particularly in the Zvishavane area could pass through roadblocks by paying a fee of US$10 to the police.
Critics argue that the police should take responsibility for these incidents as they are responsible for enforcing traffic regulations. Allowing overloaded vehicles to pass through roadblocks poses risks to passengers and other road users. Tragic Accident: Toyota Fun Cargo With 12 Passengers Overturns, Resulting In Deaths And Injuries

The Harare City Council (HCC) has expressed its condolences to the families of<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/02/16/tragic-incident-four-minors-found-dead-in-a-car-in-harare/"> four children who were found dead in a car</a> in Hopely Zone 1 on February 15, 2024. The children were identified as Allen Busiri (3), Anotidaishe Mutize (4), Ashley Matowe (3), and Kudzaishe Tsuro (3). The police discovered their lifeless bodies in a non-functional vehicle with tinted windows at 7:00 p.m.
The Mayor, Councillors, Town Clerk, Management, and staff of the HCC shared their deepest sympathies with the bereaved families. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the local government authority said:

Councillor Everjoice Kamusikiri of Ward 35 Harare South stated that the funeral would be held at a single location to ensure proper logistical coordination, given that the children were friends and relatives.
According to the police, the four children entered a parked Black Toyota Chaser motor vehicle with a non-functional engine. They closed the rear passenger door, which had tinted windows. The vehicle was parked at a Hopely Zone 1, Harare residence, from noon until 7:00 p.m.
Tragically, the children suffocated inside the vehicle, and their lifeless bodies were discovered at 7:00 p.m.

The victims suffocated while in the vehicle. Their bodies were found lying lifeless in the motor vehicle at 1900 hours.

Tragic Incident: Four Minors Found Dead In A Car In Harare

Gresham Primary School in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zvishavane/">Zvishavane</a> experienced a severe hailstorm on Wednesday 7 February 2024 that caused significant damage to the school. The hailstorm blew off the roofs of several classrooms and uprooted trees, leaving 159 pupils stranded. No one was injured.
Chrispen Moyo, the school head, reported that the hailstorm caused extensive damage to school property, including textbooks, exercise books, and furniture. The school has already submitted a report to the authorities and is now awaiting assistance from the District Civil Protection Unit (CPU).
Moyo stated that the hailstorm was intense, resulting in the blowing away of classroom roofs and the uprooting of large trees nearby. However, he confirmed that no injuries were reported among the students and staff. Moyo told the<a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/hailstorm-shakes-gresham-primary/"> Chronicle</a>:

Severe Hailstorm Damages Gresham Primary School In Zvishavane, Leaving Students Stranded

A fire broke out on Sunday night at a shopping mall located at the corner of Julius Nyerere and Speke Avenue, across from Joina City in Harare, Zimbabwe. The fire caused massive losses as goods worth thousands of dollars turned into ashes, <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/huge-fire-consumes-harare-shopping-mall/">The Herald</a> reported.
The fire is believed to have started because of an electrical fault. Hair salons, pharmacies, clothing stores, and other shops in the mall were completely destroyed.
Many people affected by the fire were too overwhelmed to comment on the situation. Some tried to salvage whatever they could, even though the fire was spreading rapidly.
People who not only worked in the shops but also lived in the mall watched helplessly as their homes were engulfed in flames. The fire brigade arrived to put out the fire, but unfortunately, most of the items on all floors were destroyed.
One woman, with tears in her eyes, expressed her pain and said she couldn’t find the words to describe what she was feeling. Her husband was still inside, trying to save a few things. She spoke to The Herald:

My husband is still inside, trying to save whatever little he can. But we have lost so much already. All we managed to salvage were a few beds, stoves, and blankets.

A nearby vendor named Annah Mubaiwa described the fire as a sudden and horrifying event. She said:

 It all happened so fast.
First, we heard the sound of breaking windows, then there was this huge flame. I can’t even describe how I felt at that moment.

Another person, Baba Anesu, suggested that goods worth millions of dollars might have been destroyed because the mall had recently been divided to accommodate more businesses.
The air in Harare smelled of smoke and ash, and the sound of sirens filled the streets. Despite being a Sunday, a large crowd gathered to witness the fire. Some were waiting for transportation, while others were passing the time. However, when a loud explosion, possibly from a gas stove, occurred, many people hurried to find cover.
Harare Mayor, Advocate Jacob Mafume, accompanied by fire officers, addressed the media at the site of the fire. He expressed his gratitude that no lives were lost in the fire incident. He also extended his appreciation to the fire department for their quick response to the scene. However, he acknowledged the unfortunate loss of furniture and other goods due to the fire. He said the local government authority was alerted about the fire through social media and phone calls. 
Mayor Mafume took the opportunity to urge the public to prioritise safety measures, such as switching off electrical devices after use. He emphasised the need for a dedicated emergency hotline, similar to the 911 system, which the local government has been requesting from the government and the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ). 
Additionally, Mayor Mafume expressed his gratitude to members of the public who assisted in combating the fire. He said their support was instrumental in minimising the damage caused by the incident.

Devastating Fire At Harare Shopping Mall Causes Massive Losses

The Mayor of Redcliff, Councillor Clayton Masiyatsva, who belonged to the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), collapsed at his home and was taken to a clinic where he died upon arrival. He served as a councillor for Ward 3 in the town. The Acting Town Clerk, Mr Nyararai Gomba, confirmed the sudden death of Mayor Masiyatsva, who had been unwell since the end of 2023. Gomba is quoted by Nehanda Radio as saying:

I confirm that Cllr Masiyatsva passed on this afternoon upon admission at Topomas Clinic in Kwekwe.
He has not been well since the end of last year and we thought he would recover but unfortunately, it has come to this.

Kwekwe Mayor Cllr Albert Zinhanga described him as a highly dedicated councillor.
Mayor Masiyatsva was re-elected in September 2023 for another term as the head of the Redcliff Municipality.

Redcliff Mayor Clayton Masiyatsva Collapses And Dies

At least two individuals are feared dead after a mineshaft collapsed and trapped them underground in Kwekwe, Zimbabwe. Rescue attempts have thus far been unsuccessful.
Mr Reason Machina, Acting Chairperson of the Kwekwe District Civil Protection Unit, confirmed the incident and expressed the challenges faced in the rescue operation. He told <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/two-feared-dead-in-mine-collapse/">The Chronicle</a>:

We received a report that at least two people were trapped underground after the mine collapsed on Sunday. Rescue efforts have been futile ever since and I am told that one of the mining giants Kuvimba Mining House has provided an excavator to help in the rescue operations.
Since Sunday to date, chances are very slim but you never know. Our aim also is to ascertain the number of people who were underground when the disaster struck.

In response to the incident, Minister of Mines and Mineral Development, Soda Zhemu, has issued a directive to suspend all artisanal mining activities due to the heavy rains Zimbabwe is currently experiencing. During the rainy season, the ground becomes unstable and unsuitable for mining operations, increasing the risk of mine collapses. Unfortunately, artisanal miners often disregard these warnings and continue their mining activities, either at disused mines or without authorisation from mine owners.

Trapped Miners Feared Dead In Kwekwe Mine Collapse

Africa has recorded a third aviation accident of the day 18 January 2024 after a Jetways Airlines Fokker 50 cargo plane crashed while landing in Ceelbarde, Somalia.
The aircraft was carrying humanitarian aid on behalf of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to the people of that district from Aden Adde Airport in Mogadishu. One of the pilots lost their life, and the co-pilot sustained injuries. The plane ran off the runway and collided with a nearby house, causing irreparable damage. The accident was reportedly caused by a malfunction that prevented the plane’s landing gear from extending properly.

The airline attributed the incident to the wet runway conditions. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, but the plane aquaplaned off the runway.

Africa's Third Aviation Accident 18 January 2024 : Jetways Airlines Cargo Plane Crashes In Somalia

Two minors who went missing after being swept away by floods have been found dead along the Hunyani River in Chinhoyi. The girls, who lived in Zvimba District, disappeared on New Year’s Eve while trying to cross the flooded river on their way to town. The first body was recovered by the police’s subaqua unit on January 2, 2024, and the second body was found a day later.
In another tragic incident, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reported that on December 30, 2023, an eight-year-old boy named Devine Musandipa drowned in a two-meter-deep pool near Sunrise Township in Sanyati, Kadoma. The incident occurred when the edge of the pool on which Devine was sitting collapsed. Devine’s father, Sifiso Bhebhe, also drowned while attempting to rescue his son.
The national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident, stating that Devine and his 12-year-old sister were collecting firewood when they came across the pool. The tragic incident occurred as they were near the pool, resulting in the loss of both the young boy and his father.
During the rainy season, drowning incidents are unfortunately common. Authorities consistently advise the public to take precautions to ensure their safety. They urge the public to avoid crossing flooded rivers or streams, as they can be swift and dangerous. They also urge parents and guardians to teach children about the dangers of playing near bodies of water and supervise them closely. 
The Meteorological Services Department consistently advises that flash floods can occur in areas even without rainfall, so people living in wetlands or planning to cross rivers and or streams should always be careful. The government also urges the public to avoid constructing houses in wetland areas. Flash floods can happen suddenly and are not always caused by rain in the specific areas that are eventually affected. This means that even if it’s not raining where you are, there could still be a risk of flash floods in nearby areas.

Two Minors Swept By Floods In Chinhoyi Found Dead

Over 130 deaths were recorded in road traffic accidents during the festive season in Zimbabwe, as reported by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP). The period covered was from 15th December 2023 to 8th January 2024. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the police national spokesperson, stated that although the number of deaths decreased compared to the previous year’s festive season (15th December 2022 to 8th January 2023), there was an increase in the number of injuries this time around.

Police Say Over 130 People Died In Festive Season Accidents

More than 2.7 million people in rural areas of Zimbabwe are facing hunger in 2024, according to the latest Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZimVAC) Rural Livelihoods Assessment report. This translates to 26% of the rural population. The report also states that approximately 100,482 metric tonnes of cereal will be required to feed the food-insecure population during the peak hunger period from January to March 2024. These projections contradict the government’s assurances that there would be no starvation and that the country had sufficient food stocks. The Ministry of Industry and Commerce announced this week that it has engaged key stakeholders, including the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe and the Grain Marketing Board, to discuss the supply of maize meal in the country. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Sithembiso .G. G. Nyoni, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, assured the nation that the Grain Millers and the Grain Marketing Board have committed to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/01/04/industry-and-commerce-minister-update-on-status-of-maize-meal-supply/">supplying sufficient maize meal through various distribution outlets</a>, including formal retailers. Additionally, ZIMRA, the customs authority, has pledged to facilitate the clearance of imported maize at ports of entry and exit. Zimbabweans have struggled to feed themselves in recent years due to the country’s economic decline and a changing climate. The depreciation of the Zimbabwe dollar has led to limited purchasing power, and the prices of essential commodities, such as wheat flour, maize meal, sugar, and rice, have increased significantly. The country’s food situation has been deteriorating, with increases in food poverty and total consumption poverty datum lines.
The projected food insecurity will have a devastating impact, particularly on marginalised communities in Matabeleland. Child malnutrition is expected to worsen, poverty levels will increase, and some children may drop out of school due to the inability to pay fees. More Than 2.7 Million Zimbabweans In The Countryside Are Facing Hunger - Report

Police Identify 5 People Who Died In CAG Bus Accident Along Karoi-Binga Road

Five people died on Thursday afternoon in an accident on the Karoi-Binga Road when a CAG bus collided head-on with a Mazda B2200. According to a police report seen by Pindula News, three of the victims died instantly at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries upon admission to the hospital. The Mazda B2200 was carrying fifteen passengers when the accident took place. Read the police report:

The bus was packed with 68 passengers, and the impact resulted in 15 individuals sustaining various injuries. They were transported to St Albert Mission Hospital for immediate medical attention.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has expressed deep concern regarding the rising number of road accidents. They have implored public service vehicle operators not to overload their vehicles, as this hazardous practice significantly contributes to the occurrence of accidents. The police have reiterated their stance that private taxis or “mushika shika” vehicles will not be granted passage through police checkpoints, including those established for road safety campaigns.

Five People Have Died In A CAG Bus Accident Along Karoi-Binga Road

A medical doctor who worked at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital as a Government Medical Officer died this morning after being struck on the back by a wheel dislodged from a Scania haulage truck while walking along the road.
A police report seen by Pindula News identified the victim as 30-year-old Dr. Tinotenda Madzima. The report also said the Scania haulage truck was travelling towards Harare. Read the police report:

This unfortunate event follows another recent incident where a female <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/01/01/police-officer-fatally-struck-by-a-dislodged-trailer-wheel/">police officer also died in similar circumstances.</a> She was standing on the side of the road when she was fatally hit by a wheel that had come off the trailer of a moving haulage truck. The incident occurred on the Harare-Mutare Road at the 51-kilometre mark.
Murder Cases:
In Guruve, the police have arrested a person named Bayisai Scotch (28) in connection with a murder case. The incident occurred on January 1, 2024, at Marirambada Farm, where Isaac Kusikwenyu (33) was fatally struck on the head with a log. Sadly, Kusikwenyu passed away on January 2, 2024. The cause of the altercation was related to a payment dispute. The suspect had refused to pay for gumboots that had been sold to him by the victim’s mother. The police are investigating the case further.
In another incident, the police in Bulawayo are seeking information from the public regarding a murder case. An unidentified woman was discovered dead in a bushy area at Denver Farm, Cowdray Park. The victim had swollen lips, cuts on the head and knees. She was wearing a red and white dress with a charcoal-grey hooded jacket. The police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and report it at the nearest police station. This information could be helpful in their ongoing investigation.

Wheel Dislodged From A Moving Truck Fatally Hits A Doctor Walking Along The Road

A man from Kariba, Zimbabwe, narrated his harrowing experience of surviving a boat accident on <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Lake_Kariba/">Lake Kariba</a>. Success Ruzvidzo, along with his son Irvin and two others, was travelling to local fishing camps to buy fish when their vessel was hit by heavy currents and capsised. While two of the passengers were rescued by other boats, Ruzvidzo and his son were washed away by the strong waters and spent the night holding onto a cooler box for safety.
The accident occurred on December 13, about 20km from the Muchenga fishing camp. Ruzvidzo said that they tried to seek safety offshore, but a powerful whirlwind hit their boat, causing it to lose control and capsize. They found themselves stranded in the water, fighting to survive, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200021503/man-swept-away-at-lake-kariba-narrates-ordeal">NewsDay</a> reported. He narrated:

The heavy storm kept hitting us but we were brave enough and kept fighting for survival. Around 3pm, a boat came for rescue but before it reached the point where we were, it ran out of fuel. The storm from that time continued hitting us but we couldn’t lose hope.
We spent the night in the water after failing to get help.
We only got help around 12 noon the following day but water kept hitting us taking us to areas such as Spurwing Islands and back in deep points of the lake.

Adan Nyekete, the captain from the inland and water department, mobilised search teams to find Ruzvidzo and his son. After an extensive search, they were located and brought to safety.

Man Narrates How He And His Son Were Swept Away By Waters On Lake Kariba

Eighteen (18) people sustained injuries in a traffic accident that took place on Friday, December 29, 2023, along the Buhera-Murambinda Road in Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the accident and informed that one passenger had been discharged from the hospital as of Friday evening.
The ZRP report stated that the accident involved a Mwayera bus, which veered off the road and flipped onto its side at the 42 km mark on the Buhera-Murambinda Road. The bus was carrying a total of 63 passengers and was en route to Harare. The injured passengers were immediately transported to Chivhu Hospital for medical treatment. Read the police report:

The accident resulted in the loss of 5 lives and left 40 people injured. The Acting President expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured. Chiwenga added that Law enforcement agencies will take strict measures against irresponsible drivers. I received with heartfelt grief the loss of 5 fellow citizens following a bus accident which occurred at the 64km peg along the Harare- Mutare highway at approximately 9:45 am on Wednesday 27 December 2023.
The accident involved a Micro-cut Investment truck (AGJ1306) travelling from Beira to Harare, a Mercedes Benz, and an Inter Africa bus (AEZ1226) travelling from Harare to Nyanga – Ruwangwe. The truck driver had 3 passengers and all escaped unharmed. The Mercedes Benz driver and 1 passenger were also unharmed.
A total of 40 people were injured and initially admitted of whom 32 were discharged. Six remain hospitalized at Marondera Provincial Hospital where two were transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital for specialized attention and treatment.
The glaring images shows the horrendous nature of the accident.
In terms of Section 32 paragraph C of the Civil Protection Act, Chapter 10.06, as the Acting President,I have invoked the relevant Sections of the Civil Protection Act to enable the State to render funeral assistance to the bereaved families and meet the medical bills of the injured.
On behalf of the Nation, and on my own behalf, I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. As a humble token of sharing in the grief, the Government of Zimbabwe in conjunction with the Insurance Council of Zimbabwe will meet the burial costs of all the deceased and provide medical assistance for the injured. As we express our deepest condolences to the bereaved families, we also wish those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.
I urge the Marondera District Civil Protection Committee to quickly establish a Command Centre for expediting the collection of the deceased and providing pyscho-social support to the bereaved families.
Whilst efforts are being made to give education and awareness on traffic safety on our highways, all motorists and public transport operators are implored to always exercise a high degree of caution and care on the roads.
Law enforcement agencies and responsible authorities, including the Zimbabwe Republic Police will ensure that stringent measures are taken to deal with errant drivers along major highways. Culprits will face the full wrath of the law.

The injured passengers were taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital for treatment.

Police Names Victims Of Marondera Accident

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported two accidents involving a CAG bus and a Stallion Cruise bus. The bus had 68 passengers. 15 passengers sustained various injuries due to the accident and were taken to St Albert Mission hospital for treatment.
In another accident which occurred on 24th December 2023 at 0100 hours, a Stallion Cruise bus fail to go through a blind rise at the 22 km peg, Gwai River, along Binga Road near Kamativi and rolled backwards. The bus fell on its side. 24 passengers were injured and were referred to Kamativi clinic for treatment. The police has established that the bus had 74 passengers.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned with road traffic accidents recorded so far in which motorists are running over pedestrians throughout the country. The pedestrians will either be standing on the side of the road, bus stop or walking beside the road.
On the other hand, Public service vehicle operators are implored not to overload their vehicles as this is contributing to some of the accidents being recorded.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will release consolidated road traffic accident statistics for the Unity day, Christmas and Boxing day on 27th December 2023.

Police Confirm Accidents Involving Stallion Cruise And CAG Buses

Four people died in a road accident on 21 December 2023 along the Harare-Bulawayo Road around 6:30 am. A police report seen by Pindula News says a Honda Fit car carrying four passengers and travelling towards Bulawayo, collided head-on with a Toyota Aqua car coming from the opposite direction. Sadly, three people from the Toyota Aqua, including the driver, and one person from the Honda Fit died instantly. Five others sustained injuries. Read the police report:

The ZRP reports a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 343 km peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road on 21/12/23 at around 0630 hours, where a motorist who was driving a Honda Fit vehicle with four passengers on board towards Bulawayo collided head-on with a Toyota Aqua vehicle which had three passengers and going the opposite direction. As a result of the collision, four people, three from the Toyota Aqua vehicle, including the driver and one from the Honda Fit vehicle, died on the spot while five others were injured.

In another accident that occurred yesterday along the Harare-Masvingo Road, three people died on the spot when an Isuzu Rigid truck collided with a Jaguar. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the fatal road accident adding that the Isuzu Rigid truck which was carrying two passengers and heading towards Harare, collided head-on with a Jaguar car carrying three passengers going towards Masvingo at around 1:00 am.  Three people in the Jaguar were trapped and died at the scene.

Accidents: 7 People Die Along Harare-Bulawayo And Harare-Masvingo Roads

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported that 15 houses were partially submerged in water in Budiriro after recent heavy rains leaving several people stranded and a six-year-old girl missing.
A police report seen by Pindula News says several people from the Budiriro 4 Paddock area in Harare were stranded but were rescued by the ZRP Sub-Aqua Unit. Read the report:

Every year, more than 50 families in Budiriro face floods because their houses are built in wetlands. The majority of wetlands invaders just construct houses without permission while some buy land from landbarons who are also not authorised to sell it by the local government. As a result, thousands of people have lost their homes over the years when the authorities demolished their structures. Sadly, they are not compensated or given new land. Urban and semi-urban areas suffer from a severe housing shortage due to the influx of people moving to cities.

Police Release Names Of People Who Died In Mazowe And Harare Accidents

Nine people died in a head-on collision close to Mazowe Citrus along the Harare-Bindura Road when two Honda Fit vehicles collided head-on at around 2 am on Monday.
Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Christopher Magomo confirmed the accident saying the vehicles burst into flames and the victims were burnt beyond recognition, <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/breaking-nine-killed-in-head-on-collision-along-harare-bindura-highway/">The Herald</a> reported.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi also confirmed the accident and said more details will emerge in due course.

9 People Die As Two Honda Fit Vehicles Collide

At least 61 migrants, including women and children, died in a devastating shipwreck off the coast of Libya, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya. The incident occurred on a dangerous migration route in the central Mediterranean, which remains one of the most dangerous in the world, <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/16/at-least-61-migrants-drown-after-shipwreck-off-libya-iom">Reuters</a> reported. Survivors reported that the boat, carrying approximately 86 people, had departed from Zwara, a city in Libya located about 110 kilometers (68 miles) from the capital city of Tripoli.
This year has seen multiple deadly incidents along this route. In June, a fishing boat packed with hundreds of migrants sank off Greece after leaving Tobruk, Libya. The journey, intended to reach Italy, resulted in 78 deaths, while the fate of 518 others remains unknown, as per an IOM report. Drowning has been identified as the primary cause of death on migration routes worldwide during the first half of 2023, with a staggering 2,200 recorded fatalities.
The IOM report further revealed that the central Mediterranean route was the deadliest, accounting for a total of 1,727 deaths and disappearances along its shores during the same period. Most of these tragic incidents occurred in Tunisia, followed by Libya. However, the actual numbers are believed to be higher, as the figures provided by the IOM likely underestimate the true scale of the crisis.
The situation in Italy has been particularly severe, with sea migrant arrivals nearly doubling in 2023 compared to the same period last year. Approximately 140,000 people have arrived on Italian shores, with the majority originating from Tunisia. The small Italian island of Lampedusa has been overwhelmed by the influx of migrants.
In response to these challenges, the European Union and Tunisia signed a “strategic partnership” agreement in July, aiming to combat human traffickers and strengthen sea borders. Two people were killed in a tragic road accident on the Harare-Masvingo highway. The accident involved a Toyota Hiace commuter omnibus (kombi) and a Toyota Probox vehicle. The kombi was carrying 12 passengers while the Probox had four passengers.
According to a police report seen by Pindula News, the vehicles collided head-on at the 263-kilometre mark. Eleven other individuals sustained injuries and were taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for treatment. Read the report by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP):

Meanwhile, police in Nkayi are currently investigating a hit-and-run incident that took place on the Bulawayo-Nkayi Road. The incident occurred on 14 December 2023 at the 45-kilometre mark. An unidentified driver hit a pedestrian and fled the scene without stopping. The victim suffered a fractured right leg and is currently receiving treatment at Inyathi District Hospital. Police are appealing to anyone who has any information about the incident to report it to the nearest Police Station.

Another Kombi Accident Kills 2 Along Harare-Masvingo Road

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported that six (6) people died in a tragic road accident that took place on the Harare-Bulawayo Road near the National Museum of African Liberation in Harare on Friday. The museum is located near Warren Park 1 High School.
According to the police statement seen by Pindula News, the accident involved two commuter omnibuses (kombi) – a Toyota Hiace carrying 15 passengers, a Nissan Caravan and an AVM bus.

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 15/12/23 at around 1800 hours along Harare-Bulawayo Road near National Museum of African Liberation, Harare in which six people were killed whilst 10 others were injured when a Toyota Hiace kombi with 15 passengers on board was involved in a head on collision with a Nissan Caravan kombi with three passengers on board which was travelling towards Harare CBD.

Following the initial collision, the Toyota Hiace struck an AVM bus with three passengers that was also heading towards Harare CBD. The Toyota Hiace had crossed into the lane of oncoming traffic.
The deceased individuals were taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while the injured victims are receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
According to a witness named Justice Mhishi, the Toyota Hiace Kombi caused the accident. Mhishi explained that he was driving behind the bus involved in the accident. He and others tried their best to help the injured people. Mhishi recounted:

I was behind the bus. We tried our best kubuditsa vanhu (to extract people), one woman was vomiting blood the only word she said ‘ko VANA VANGU’ (what about my kids) and she died after that, One woman lost two kids in my eyes.

Six People Die In A Road Accident Near Warren Park High School

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced the death of senior Chief Superintendent Caven Tachiona. According to a statement seen by Pindula News, the police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, revealed that Tachiona was 51 years old. Read the statement:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police family wishes to express its deep sorrow on the untimely death of Chief Superintendent Cavin Tachiona (51), who passed away on 02 December 2023 at House Number D Jock Douglas Road, Mkushi Training Academy after a long illness.
At the time of his death, the late senior officer was the Staff Officer and aide de camp to the Commissioner-General of Police. He was born on 15th August 1972 and was attested into the Zimbabwe Republic Police on 25th November 1999.
Soon after training, he was posted to ZRP Sakubva, Mutare in Manicaland Province. His policing career took him to various stations in Manicaland and Police General Headquarters where he held several positions as he through the ranks.
A church service for the late senior officer was held at Mkushi Training. Academy Chapel on Monday 4th December 2023. Burial has since been scheduled for Zororo Cemetery, Harare at 1400 hours this afternoon.
The Commissioner-General of Police, Tandabantu Godwin MATANGA, senior officers and the entire ZRP family is deeply saddened by the untimely passing on of the illustrious and dedicated senior officer.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.

In a separate accident, two people lost their lives, and one person was injured. It happened on November 25, 2023, around 7:00 PM when a Toyota Alteza car went off the road and crashed into a tree along 12th Avenue, between Park Road and Herman Road. The deceased were taken to the United Bulawayo Group of Hospitals for post-mortem, while the injured person is receiving treatment at the same hospital. Accidents tend to increase during holidays and festive seasons, mostly due to various reasons.
Drivers, motorists, and pedestrians are always urged to prioritise safety during holidays and festive seasons. This includes following traffic rules, avoiding distractions, never driving under the influence, wearing seatbelts, being cautious at intersections, watching for pedestrians, using designated crosswalks, staying visible, being patient and considerate, and staying alert and well-rested. 5 People Die In Two Separate Accidents, Five Others Injured

The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Felix Mhona has said losing 22 people in a single accident is the worst nightmare. He made the remarks in his condolence message following the death of 22 people in an accident involving a Toyota Quantum and a truck at the 27-kilometre peg along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road. The Minister said the Government had already initiated steps to curb road carnage when the tragedy occurred. Below is the full statement :

<h3>STATEMENT ON THE TOYOTA QUANTUM CRASH</h3>
It is with a heavy heart that I address the nation on the bus crash which occurred on Tuesday 14 November 2023, at the 27 km peg along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road in Umzingwane District.
Tragically, 22 people died on the spot when the driver of a Toyota Quantum attempted to overtake and encroached into the lane of an oncoming lorry, leading to a head-on collision. Indeed, this is a worst nightmare to lose several of our beloved ones in such a single terrible crash, and it is certainly the worst nightmare that families and the whole nation can endure.
Our thoughts are with the victims of the crash, the bereaved families, the injured and the survivors who witnessed the gruesome, traumatic and dark moment of the accident. During this somber period, we call upon the whole nation to commiserate with the affected families, at a time when we wish a speedy recovery to the injured. We only wish that we do not record further casualties as the survivors continue to receive treatment and care.
Incidences of this nature only serve as a clarion call to all our stakeholders of the road traffic ecosystem, including motorists, operators and passengers to be more vigilant against road traffic violations, especially speeding. This unfortunate fatality is recorded as we approach the festive season, and it is our hope that such occurrences do not recur. The Ministry rallies all traffic law enforcement agencies, road traffic safety actors, motorists and road users to collaborate against road fatalities.

We urge the nation to formulate rational decisions in making travel choices and prioritise use of safer vehicles with the right state of mind. Rational behaviours and attitudes are ingredients of a safer road traffic management regime, where all actors play their party for traffic safety. As passionate proponents of Road Safety, we wish to assure the nation that the Second Republic is committed to the formulation of robust legal, policy and administrative mechanisms to improve the country’s road safety regime and performance. The recent enactment of Statutory Instrument 118 of 2023 on Speed Limiting and Monitoring Devices Regulations and Statutory Instrument 119 of 2023 on Licensing of Drivers Regulations are an eloquent testimony of our commitment.
We continue to urge all stakeholders to ensure compliance with the legal framework. The Government, through my Ministry, shall continue to monitor the situation and render appropriate assistance to the bereaved families and survivors of the accident.
