CAPS United Wins, Highlanders In Goalless Draw

CAPS United on Sunday put down a marker with a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League opening day victory over Manica Diamonds at the National Sports Stadium.

The Green Machine overcame Manica Diamonds 2-0, with both goals coming in the first half.

An early goal by Joseph Thulani, who would be red-carded for a harsh tackle late in the second half, and another strike by Blessing Sarupinda just before the end of the first half secured three points for Makepekepe.

CAPS United are now top of the log standings, above FC Platinum, Dynamos and Triangle, as they scored two goals and kept a clean sheet.

Speaking after the match, CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe expressed satisfaction at the manner in which maximum points were secured. He said:

I thought it was a very good performance from my own viewpoint.

I think the performance gives credibility to our performance and I am extremely happy.

The team really wanted it, the hunger was evident.

The second half performance, in which we engaged low gears, was deliberate. There is no way that one team can dominate for the entire 90 minutes.

We knew after getting what we wanted in the first half, we didn’t need to play like we were chasing the game in the second half.

With a two-goal advantage going into the second half, we didn’t want to risk leaving a lot of gaps behind.

We did that with the hope of also catching them on the counter and I am extremely happy with how the players applied themselves.

If anything, I am very happy with our second half performance since we got the job done in the first half.

In the other matches played on Sunday, 19 March, Triangle United beat Herentals 1-0, while Highlanders were held to a goalless draw by ZPC Kariba.

The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League has lined up two matches for this Monday, 20 March.

Yadah takes on Greenfuel at the National Sports Stadium at 12 PM, and Cranborne Bullets hosts Black Rhinos at the same venue at 3 PM.
