The Zimbabwe Republic Police has announced the arrest of one Stephen Matimbire for smuggling goods words approximately US$121 000 from South Africa into Zimbabwe.
ZRP say the 43-year-old was intercepted by the Ferret team which discovered that he was carrying undeclared goods in a truck. Pindula News presents a police report on the case:
A team of Police officers and other Security Services under operation ‘No to Cross Border Crimes’, in Beitbridge have arrested Stephen Matimbire (43) for smuggling.
The suspect was intercepted by the ferret team while driving a Transgenius Transport Truck (FJY118L) with a trailer (FJY128L) at Engen Garage on 28/11/21 at around 2300 hours.
The truck was searched and it was noted that the suspect did not pay import duty for 21 refrigerators and an assortment of household goods valued at approximately US$120 750.
In January this year, police launched operation “No to Cross Border Crimes/ Fhasi Ngamilandu Yamukanoni Yamashango/Mhosva Pamiganhu Ngadzipere/Amacala Kawaphele Emingceleni Yelizwe” in a bid to combat border-related crimes such as smuggling and border jumping.
This came after Zimbabwe and South Africa had closed the Beitbridge Border Post to ordinary travellers as part of the two countries’ efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
