Amnesty International Demands Immediate And Unconditional Release Of Sikhala

Amnesty International (AI) has called on Zimbabwean authorities to release Members of Parliament Job Sikhala (Zengeza West) and Godfrey Sithole (Chitungwiza North).

Today, 21 September 2022, marks 100 days since Sikhala and Sithole were jailed at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison.

The Executive Director of Amnesty International Zimbabwe, Lucia Masuka, said the continued incarceration of the opposition legislators reveals the politicisation of the justice system in Zimbabwe. Said Masuka:

The ongoing arbitrary detention of Sikhala and Sithole is unjust and abusive. It has caused unspeakable emotional distress to them and their families.

Zimbabwean authorities cannot continue to incarcerate Sikhala and Sithole on trumped-up charges. They must be released immediately and unconditionally.

… The continued incarceration of Sikhala and Sithole is a travesty of justice. They are victims of a government hellbent on silencing opposition voices.

Zimbabwean authorities must stop criminalizing dissent and instead create a conducive environment for people to freely express themselves.

Sikhala and Sithole were arrested on 14 June 2022 after attending the funeral of political activist, Moreblessing Ali, who was abducted and killed by people with suspected links to ZANU PF.

Ali was missing for three weeks before being found murdered and her body mutilated on 11 June 2022.

Sikhala, Sithole and 14 CCC members are being accused of encouraging their supporters to cause violence in Nyatsime, Chitungwiza, during Ali’s memorial.

They are facing charges of inciting violence and obstruction of justice and were denied bail several times by the courts.

don't interfere with our judicial system.

Machiavelli 4 months ago

@pk, that maxim only holds water if the judicial system is functional. It is certainly not applicable in Zimbabwe where the judiciary is painfully and obviously captured by ZANU and the ZANU led government. The judicial system is now a tool, rather a weapon to eradicate the opposition and vocal civic society. ZANU has already interfered with the judicial system. Therefore a counter interference is required.

Laws of Physics tell us that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. ZANU has set in motion a repressive action, which can only be countered by an equal and opposite anti-repressive action.

As Walter Rodney once pointed out, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. Sikhala is ZANU's terrorist. The converse is true. To people like me Sikhala is a Freedom Fighter

For those interested, we have since received the document which had 30 000 signatures demanding the release ofJob Sikhala and others

What is happening with Advocate Job Sikhala and Honourable Godfrey Sithole's case is so shameful that even some ZANU PF members are now not free to move in public for fear of being rebuked by members of the public.

It is clearly in the open that ZANU PF is using judiciary system as its weapon. Zimbabwe Constitution is very clear on bail. Accused persons of whatever crime, murder included, get bail.

The problem Zimbabwe has is we have neighbours like South Africa who do not tell the truth about Zimbabwe. Just last week, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, pleaded with the United States of America President to unshackle Zimbabwe from sanctions as they are driving young Zimbabweans in droves to South Africa.

Young Zimbabweans are leaving Zimbabwe in droves because there is no rule of law, human rights abuses and top level corruption.

Yours sincerely

@Machiavelli & Sonboy Told you at the beginning of the saga that all other organisations (except ZANU PF) are just toothless dogs, told you that they would be released when and if the supreme party deems necessary or when they show signs of rehabilitation kkkkkkkk Chikurubi is not such a bad place to be for someone who needs reorientation when his ideology has shown signs of going offtrack kkkkkkk

To set the record straight, @Captain Jack Sparrow, I, Machiavelli do not recall saying anything akin to what you wrongfully attribute to me.

I therefore disown any statement or allusion attributed to me by the self same Captain Jack Sparrow.
